Model Products
Based on model products and technologies, the project demonstrates that biocontrol can be effective and profitable.
Biological rodent control using Sarcocystis singaporensisSarcocystis singaporensis is a protozoan parasite that specifically targets certain rat species, all of which are of major economic importance or represent a health risk to humans. It is environmentally safe and poses no health risks to humans and other animals. A commercial product containing the parasite has been developed in cooperation with the DOA in Thailand, University of Hohenheim in Germany, and Bayer Corporation. It is now locally produced and distributed under the trade name PRORODENT by Uniseeds Co. Ltd. in Thailand. Recently, registration has been successfully completed in Vietnam and production will be launched in Indonesia with local private partners.
Control of rhinoceros beetle in oil palm using pheromoneIn cooperation with local companies and IBMA the project will establish new pheromone trapping techniques for control of rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) in oil palm plantations. A new dispenser technology allows for more economic use of pheromones compared to the existing ones. Additionally, an attract-and-kill mechanism will be tested using entomopathogenic nematodes.
Control of cocoa pod borer in IndonesiaCocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella) is a major threat to cocoa production. Yield and quality have suffered severely from infestation, especially in Indonesia where production is mainly in the hands of smallholders. Due to an increasing resistance of the pest to chemicals, biocontrol approaches offer a good perspective in many locations. The project offers hands-on expertise in integrated control concepts including a new formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bathindo Plus; currently under registration by PT Biotama) and a pheromone technology for mass trapping of cocoa pod borer, which is jointly developed with Mars Inc. and Pest Control India (PCI) Ltd.
